Carroll Claiborn Marstin, 76, of Brookneal passed away Saturday, September 16, 2017 at his home after a 21 year battle with cancer. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 55 years, Martha Wingfield Marstin.
Claiborn was born in Campbell County, March 22, 1941 son of the late William Wylie Marstin and Meredith Elder Marstin. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at age 11, he loved the Lord and was a faithful member of Falling River Baptist Church for 65 years, where he served as a Trustee, Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and was part of the jail ministry team.
He was a 1960 graduate of William Campbell High School, a charter member of the Brookneal Rescue Squad, where he served as a volunteer for 25 years. Claiborn retired from General Electric/Ericsson and later worked for Henderson Funeral Home. He loved studying the Bible, woodworking, working on the farm and spending time with his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Rev. W. Lynn Marstin and wife Rhonda of Gretna; a daughter, Amanda M. Gunn and husband Craig of Chesterfield; four grandchildren, Mark W. Marstin and wife Hillary, Matthew D. Marstin, Clint C. Gunn and Megan C. Gunn; one great-grandson due in January; one brother, Rayford Marstin and wife Shirley of Hilton Head, S.C.; one sister, Connie M. Coates and husband Hammond of Shelby, N.C.; two brothers-in-law, Charles W. Wingfield and wife Kathy of Mechanicsville, Danny Fallen of Lynchburg; one sister-in-law, Janet W. Brooks and husband Jack of Lynchburg.
The family would like to give a special “thank you” to Dr. John L. MacNeill and the staff at Alan B. Pearson Cancer Center, Dr. Larry Clark, Dr. Don E. Carwile and staff at Brookneal Family Medical, Dr. Robert Bass, Lindsey Tuck, his home health nurse, and the many others who took care of him over the last 21 years.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at Falling River Baptist Church by the Rev. Keith Williams and the Rev. W. Lynn Marstin with interment to follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:30 p.m. Monday, September 18, 2017 at Falling River Baptist Church and at the residence other times.
