Marion Slate Berkley

Marion Elizabeth Slate Berkley, 86, of Hat Creek Road, Brookneal went home to her Heavenly Father March 17, 2014. She was the wife of Cecil Marvin Berkley Sr. for 68 years.

Mrs. Berkley was born in Campbell County, October 12, 1927 a daughter of the late Willie Vest Slate and Mabel Holt Slate. She was a member of Falling River Baptist Church and a member of the Red Hill Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. While living in Northern Virginia for 30 years, she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Woodbridge where she held many positions.

Marion was a dedicated Christian and a very caring person who loved the Lord, her husband, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and church family. With her beautiful smile and dry wit, she always encouraged family, friends and strangers to love one another with patience and a forgiving heart. She enjoyed reading the Bible and writing notes to loved ones, and with her striking handwriting, she always knew just what to write.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son Cecil Marvin Berkley Jr. (Catherine) of Woodbridge; a daughter-in-law, Mae Berkley of Stafford; five grandchildren, Dalma Berkley, Rebecca Ann Berkley Valker, Kenneth Wayne Berkley Jr. (Melissa), Kevin Russell Berkley (Ana), Cecil Marvin Berkley III; 10 great grandchildren; two great great granddaughters; a sister, Carolyn Mason of Brookneal; a brother, William Henry Slate (Lurlee) of Naruna; a sister-in-law, Nancy Berkeley of Myrtle Beach, SC; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Wayne Berkley Sr.

A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 pm Friday, March 21, 2014 at Falling River Baptist Church by the Rev. Keith Williams with internment to follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church sanctuary and following the committal service in the church fellowship hall.
