Virginia Rudder Sowell, 96, of Brookneal passed away at her home, where she had lived her whole life, on July 5, 2019. She was the wife of the late Willmer Sowell.
Virginia was born May 3, 1923 in Campbell County, a daughter of the late Robert “Bob” Rudder and Nora Roark Rudder. She was an active member of Brookneal Baptist Church for as long as she was able to attend and a retired employee of Burlington Industries. Virginia worked all her life, into her eighties.
She is survived by two daughters, Betty Sue Mitchell (Ken), Kay Harris (Tinkie) all of Brookneal; three grandchildren, Jennifer Claybrook (Hunter), Russell “Rusty” Harris (Brandi) of Spout Spring, and Marsha Green (Trip) of Brookneal; the loves of her life, her great-grandchildren, Parker and Bailey Claybrook, Rylee, Layla and Piper Harris, Liam and Scarlett Green; a sister-in-law, Hilda Rudder; special nieces and nephews, Linda Elder (Danny), Tommy Rudder (Lori), Eva Mason (Tonchie), and Theresa Bienkowski (Mark); a devoted great niece, Meghan Rudder; and many other nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Fore; two brothers, R. O. and William “Bill” Rudder.
The family would like to thank Gabe, Tanya and Karen of New Century Hospice and especially Dee Britt and Michelle King of Centra Hospice for the care that was given to our mother and grandmother. Michelle stayed with the family until Mom passed away and was a great comfort to us all. The family would also like to thank all her special caregivers over the years, especially Vanessa Boyd, Barbara Jennings, Patricia Blunt, Ann Johnson, and Cassidy Irby.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, July 8, 2019 at Brookneal Baptist Church by the Rev. Matthew Killmon with interment to follow in Wickliffe Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7:00 p.m. Sunday, July 7, 2019 at Henderson Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Brookneal and at the residence other times.
