George Palmer Dunkley, Jr., 76, of Swinging Bridge Rd., Gladys passed away, after a lengthy illness, Monday, June 9, 2014 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was the husband of Barbara Powell Dunkley for 57 years.
Mr. Dunkley was born in Halifax County, March 25, 1938 a son of the late George Palmer Dunkley, Sr. and Edna Russell Dunkley. He was a member of Lighthouse Community Baptist Church in Brookneal. He was a Radiation Control Specialist for the Newport News Shipyard and Babcock and Wilcox Co. He was a farmer at heart, loved working in the soil and raising beef cattle.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, George “Sonny” Dunkley of Gladys, Gregory Dunkley of Cincinnati, OH; one daughter, Mary Ann Davies (husband, John Siddall) of Midlothian; four grandsons, Landon Dunkley (Amanda) of Richmond, Justin Dunkley (fiancée, Lisa Rusinko) of Stephens City, Graham Davies of New York, NY, Noah Dunkley of Monroe; one granddaughter, Anna Davies of Richmond; one great-grandson, Palmer Dunkley; and his faithful four-legged companion, Rascal.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 pm Friday, June 13, 2014 at Lighthouse Community Baptist Church by Pastor Bob Andrews with interment to follow in Catawba Baptist Church Cemetery, Nathalie.
The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:00 pm Thursday, June 12, 2014 at Henderson Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Brookneal.
