Frances Maddox Smith passed away on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at home in Gladys, Virginia. Born in Lynchburg, VA on October 15, 1950, she was the daughter of the late David Basil Maddox and the late Mary Marshall Maddox.
She is survived by a loving and beloved husband of 44 years, Steven Wright Smith. In addition, she is survived by three sons: Stuart Marshall Smith (Christie) of Brookneal, David Miller Smith (Danielle) of Chesterfield and Christopher Trent Smith (Michelle) of Gladys; and four grandsons: Kai Douglas Smith, Tristan O’Connell Smith, Colton James Smith and Andrew Maddox Smith. She also is survived by close in-laws, cousins and friends, including a dear friend of over 50 years, Mary Kathryn McIvor.
She graduated from William Campbell High School, received a B.A. in English from Westhampton College, and received a M.A. in English from Longwood College. She taught Latin, French and English for over 30 years in Lynchburg City Schools, Henrico County Schools, Campbell County Schools and Saint Andrews Episcopal School in Amarillo, TX. She loved her students and loved teaching.
She was a lifelong member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, where she served as Sunday school teacher, pianist, director of VBS, deacon, and a member of multiple committees. She was blessed with many talents and interests and developed these through lifelong learning. She accepted her blessings with humility, and she accepted burdens with grace and dignity.
The family is grateful to the members of our medical community for their compassionate and expert care, especially Brookneal Family Medical, Pearson Cancer Center, and Duke University Hospital.
The family will greet friends on Thursday, March 7, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. at Henderson Funeral Home, 221 Old Main Street, Brookneal, VA.
A memorial service will be held at Ebenezer Baptist Church at 267 Ebenezer Road, Naruna, VA at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2019. The church will host a meal and reception in the church fellowship hall immediately following the memorial service.
