Mary Ida Talley McHaney, 81, of Gladys gained her heavenly wings, after a long illness, on Monday, April 15, 2019 surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late Ralph Hunter McHaney.
Mary Ida was born in Rustburg, January 26, 1938, a daughter of the late Samuel Pinkney Talley and Ida Lowery Talley. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and served as clerk for 17 years. She was also a retired employee of the United States Postal Service and was Postmaster of the Naruna Post Office for 33 years.
She is survived by three daughters, Barbara Brown (Barry) of Gladys, Bonnie McHaney of Lynchburg, Betsy Layne (Ray) of Nathalie; five grandchildren, Jamie Owen, Derek McCann, Colton McHaney, Ashley McHaney and Amy Grubbs; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Earl W. Talley; and one sister, Edna T. Pugh both of Lynchburg; and many nieces and nephews. Max Elder, Jr. was the son Mary never had, and through his devotion and support, became a beloved member of our family. She was preceded in death by four brothers, William, Samuel, Preston and Donald Talley; a half-sister, Lessie Quick; two sons-in-law, George Owen and Jeff Bates.
The family would like to thank Dr. Jason Hackenbracht, Dr. John Plankeel and Dr. William Jones for the care of their mother during her illness. Also special thanks to Brenda Younger, Betty Trent, Patty Green, Lisa Curtis, and all of Centra Hospice.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 18, 2019 at Ebenezer Baptist Church by the Rev. Jamie Adams and the Rev. Johnny Roberts with interment to follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church and at her residence other times.
