Bernice Mays Johnson Jean, 74, of Brookneal passed away Monday, October 11, 2021 peacefully at her home. She was the wife of the late George Robert Jean, Jr. Bernice was born in Amherst County, May 7, 1947, daughter of the late Hazel W. Johnson and Georgie Mays Johnson. She was a member of Brookneal United Methodist Church, where she served in the choir, a member of the Red Hill Garden Club, Daughters of the American Revolution and was a retired office assistant for the Town of Brookneal. She is survived by a daughter, Natalie Jean Cox (Brian); two grandchildren, Emin Robert Cox, and Mary Chandler Cox all of Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Mary Oneda Johnson Wootton (Earl); two brothers, Lewis E. Johnson (Cheryle) all of Lynchburg, Ivan L. Johnson (Bonnie) of Madison Heights; three nieces, Melanie Johnson, Kimberly Darrah, and Kenley Menefee; and three nephews, Todd and Van Johnson, and Robert Menefee. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, October 15, 2021 at Wickliffe Cemetery by the Rev. Allan Murphy. An outside reception will be held following the graveside service at her home. Memorial contributions may be made to Centra Hospice, 2097 Langhorne Rd., Lynchburg, VA 24502 The family will receive friends at the home.
