Lewis Mitchell “Bill” East, 70, of Long Island, passed away Thursday, December 21, 2023 at Centra Gretna Medical Center. He was the husband of Cathy Childress East. Bill was born in Halifax County on February 13, 1953, a son of the late Clifton East and Dorothy Singleton East. He was a member of Ellis Creek Baptist Church and had been employed by Burruss Lumber of Brookneal and later Westover Dairy of Lynchburg. Bill was known for his kindness and sense of humor. He was the best husband and friend. In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by special niece: Nikki East (Christy) and their children Angel, Christian (Shaniya), and Jace; nephew: Okie Rigney, III; niece: Dale Murray; stepchildren: Matthew Dillon Harris, Amanda Guthrie (Donnie), Wanda Womack, and Rhonda Womack; step granddaughter: Bella Maria Govea; sister-in-law: Sharon East; special friends: Charles and Sandra Waller, Brenda Cook, MJ Beasley, James and Louise Sensabaugh, Ellen Neas (Bobby) and Dan Dixon. He was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law, Peachye Childress; 5 brothers: Acie, Albert, Charlie, Granville and Stuart; 3 sisters: Hazel, Louise and Ellen; niece: Marie; great niece: Teresa and friend: Henry Cook.
