Catherine Crews Gates, 96, of Gladys passed away Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at home. She was the wife of the late John Gates. Mrs. Gates was born in Halifax County, April 2, 1920 daughter of the late Charles Edwin Crews and Mildred Beasley Crews. She was a member of Sharon Methodist Church and a former employee of Malone Freight Lines. She is survived by one son, Marvin Phaup Jr. (Sandra) of Washington, D.C.; a daughter-in-law, Ann Phaup Phillips of Schenectady, N.Y.; three grandchildren, William Phaup of Portland, Ore., Samuel Phaup of Palo Alto, Calif., Lori Phaup Simons of Stamford, Conn.; two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Earl Dwight Phaup. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 10, 2016 at Smyrna Methodist Church by the Rev. Robert Phaup with interment in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. Memorial contributions may be made to Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Plantation or your favorite charity.
