Dorothy “Dottie” Hughes Yates, 98, of Brookneal, passed away at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Brookneal on Tuesday, February 11, 2025. She was the wife of the late Henry F. Yates. Dottie was born in Georgia on January 16, 1927, a daughter of the late Joseph Burke Hughes and the late Vera Connell Hughes. She was an R.N. retired from Centra. She was a member of Brookneal Presbyterian Church and attended Falling River Baptist Church. Dottie was a member of South Central Parish Quilting Group and volunteered at Red Hill for over 20 years. Dottie is survived by a son Fredrick Michael Yates of Brookneal; grandchildren, Makenzie Taylor (Josh) of Nathalie, Jennifer Edmonds (William) of Lynchburg, Matthew Yates (Angie) of Madison Heights, Nicole Smit (Brian) of CO., Claire Tsukashima (Shiro) of Japan; great grandchildren, Scout Taylor, Estella Short, Anna Smit, Jacob and Ben Yates; step-grandchildren, Shawna Sanders, Kirk Sanders of CA; a sister Mickie Hancock (Max) of GA.; a brother William Hughes (Martha) of AL.; and a special care giver, Barbara Baker. She was preceded in death by a son Robert “Bobby” Yates, two daughters, Susan Clark, Martha Guthrie; grandson, Daniel Guthrie; sister, Sammie Alexsuk; brother Donald Hughes; and son-in-law Mike Guthrie. A funeral service will be conducted by Rev. Herndon Jeffreys and Rev. Lynn Marstin on Friday, February 14, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Falling River Baptist Church with interment to follow at Wickliffe Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service and following the graveside service return to Falling River for fellowship.
