It is with deep sorrow and loving remembrance that we announce that Edgar Carlton Lacks, Jr., went to his heavenly home on November 8, 2025 at the age of 83. Born April 2, 1942, Carlton was a devoted husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edgar Carlton, Sr. and Ruby Lacks. He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Deborah Lacks of Brookneal; daughters Amy Powell (Jerry) and Ann Carlton Seamster, both of South Boston; stepsons Rodney Mason (Leigh Anne) of Brookneal and Derek Mason (Vanessa) of South Boston; and sisters, Peggy Wazeka of Clover and Brenda (Mac) McDannald of South Boston. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren who fondly referred to him as their “Gran”; Lindsey Viruet (Frank) of Durham, NC, Morgan Loftis (Zack) of Virgilina; Zach Owen (Sydney) of Skipwith; Olivia, Eli, and Ella Seamster of South Boston; Mitch Mason (Taylor) and Parker Mason (Chloe)of Brookneal; Bryce Mason of Arlington; Owen and Grae Mason of South Boston; one great-granddaughter, Avery Kate Mason, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Carlton was an active and devoted member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, where he served as treasurer of the United Methodist Men’s group. He was a committed participant in Woodworkers for Jesus and a member of the Lions Club. Carlton proudly retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) after a long, successful career as a surveyor. A lifelong gardener and nature lover, Carlton had a special touch that made anything he tended flourish. He took great joy in working in his yard and found deep peace and purpose in the natural world around him.
Those who knew Carlton will remember his quiet demeanor, gentle spirit, and the way he cared for his family, friends, and the animals he adored. His love of the outdoors and his talent for helping things grow were gifts he shared freely with others.
