Martha Madison Yates Guthrie, 65, of Brookneal passed away Saturday, June 30, 2018 at home. She was the wife of the late Hugh Michael Guthrie. Martha was born in Lynchburg, January 29, 1953, a daughter of Dorothy Hughes Yates of Brookneal and the late Henry Fredrick Yates. She was a member of Brookneal Presbyterian Church and a nurse at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital for 44 years. In addition to her mother, she is survived by a daughter, MaKenzie Madison Guthrie; mother-in-law, Phyllis Guthrie Neal; two brothers, F. Michael Yates all of Brookneal, and Robert H. Yates (Coleen) of California; a sister, Susan Yates Clark of North Carolina; sister-in-law, Nan Guthrie Moseley (Michael) of Brookneal; two brothers-in-law, Al Guthrie (Brenda) of Rustburg, Greg Guthrie (Teresa) of Nathalie; beloved granddaughter, Estella Short of Nathalie; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Asher Guthrie. She was a mother and friend who loved selflessly and generously. A free spirit who enjoyed life and made sure everyone around her enjoyed life as well. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 5, 2018 at Falling River Baptist Church by the Rev. Keith Williams. The family will receive friends at the home of Nan and Michael Moseley, Juniper Cliff Road, Brookneal. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
