I was shocked and sadden to hear of Col. Smith's passing. I got to know him through the museum...he was truly an officer and a gentleman. My condolences to his family.

Anne and Family, While our friendship developed through the Virginia Corvette Club and our love of political discussions a with Col. Paul Lilly and Gene's introducing of Elaine and me to Sheriff Whit Clark. Gene became a fast friend whom I discussed many political topicals with. He also introduced us to the German Club. Anne and Family: Mercedes and I were distressed when we read Lynchburg paper about Gene’s passing. We certainly have enjoyed meeting you, having dinner and the numerous emails we exchanged with Gene. He certainly was outspoken and delight to share conversation. He was a staunch conservative and a supporter of our country. Sorry we missed the service. Best Leyburn and Mercedes

Dear Anne and Family. I was so saddened to hear of the passing of Gene. What a sweet, warm soul he was. I am so grateful and honored to call him friend over the the 7 plus years. We met at the Bedford County JROTC Banquet and happened to be sitting next to each other as presenters. We became good friends over the years and although I hadn't spoken to him this past year, I thought of he and Anne so often. Truly good, good people! My heart is very heavy... may God continue to bless him, Anne and their family. Much Love, Meg Kiely

Sister Anne and Family: On behalf of Chester Odd Fellows Lodge No. 281, I extend our love and comfort to you during this time. During the short time I knew Brother Gene, they were memorable times! I was so glad to see him on the Brookneal Lodge parade float and he seemed to have a fantastic time of fellowship with us all. Please let us know if you need anything. Your lodge family is with you! Friendship, Love, and Truth ❤️ Nick Curry, Noble Grand Chester #281

To Anne and the family, It was my honor to have had Gene for a teacher both in high school (William Campbell, history) and college (Lynchburg College, ROTC). He was a kind, gentle soul and even though I saw him very infrequently over the years after school, he always remembered me and greeted me cheerfully. I'm sorry for his passing, my deepest sympathies to you all, Dean Jarvis

Colonel Smith was my coworker at HCHS and my friend. As our Senior Army Instructor, he had a positive impact on the JROTC cadets under his supervision. He will be missed by all of us who knew him. Sending my sincere sympathy to Ann and his children. Larry Clark, former Principal HCHS
