Charlie Eugene Crews, Sr. 78, of Brookneal passed away Thursday, November 4, 2021 at home. He was the husband of Inez Hall St. John-Crews.
Mr. Crews was born in Halifax County, July 3, 1943 son of the late Charlie Lee Crews and Irene Jennings Crews. He was a member of Childrey Baptist Church and owner and operator of Tri-County Insulation for 34 years. Gene supported and mentored Dixie Youth Baseball, was devoted to his family and loved each one of them unconditionally.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Chuck Crews; a daughter, Velvet McCall both of Nathalie; two stepsons, Scott St. John (Charity) of Charlotte, N.C., Michael St. John (Mindy) of Butler, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Shaun McCall (Eden) of Danville, Jessica McCall (Dillon Harvey) of Nathalie, Trace Crews (Ashley) of Fairbanks, Alaska; four step grandchildren, Serenity St. John of Brookneal, Addison St. John of Charlotte, N.C., Ashleigh St. John Adams (Daniel) of Raleigh, N.C., Nikala St. John of Durham, N.C.; great-granddaughter, Oakley Jean Harvey, his namesake; a sister, Becky Perkins of Nathalie; a beloved son-in-law, Long McCall; “grand puppy” Savannah Hawkins; his beloved dog, Maggie; a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rachel Adams Crews; three brothers, Giles T. Crews, Richard L. Crews, and Joe W. Crews.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 7, 2021 at Childrey Baptist Church by the Rev. Jerry Stanfield, Rev. Shelton Miles, and Rev. Jack Stewart with interment to follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church and at the residence other times.
Memorial contributions may be made to Dixie Youth Baseball.
