Curtis E. Hamlett, Sr., 96, of Brookneal passed away Saturday, November 6, 2021 at Heritage Hall Nursing Home, Brookneal. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 76 years, Lula Laughlin Hamlett. Curtis was born in Charlotte County, August 15, 1925, son of the late Roger Hamlett and Copeland Hamlett. He served his country in World War II, as an Infantry Staff Sergeant, was a Prisoner of War, and received the Bronze Star. He worked for Burlington Industries for 21 years as Assistant Plant Engineer and as Plant Engineer for Thomasville Furniture for 13 years, served as Chief of Brookneal Volunteer Fire department for several years, and was a lifetime member of the Brookneal Sportsman’s Club. He was preceded in death by a grandson, his hunting and fishing “buddy”, Justin Hamlett. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Curtis E. Hamlett, Jr. “Pete” (Betsy) of Phenix, Thomas Henry Hamlett (Deborah) of Lynchburg; one daughter, Frankie H. Chernault (Gene) of Appomattox; four grandchildren, Anissa H. Taylor (Jay), Gregory J. Hamlett (Melissa), Derek Chernault (Amy), and Heather H. Mayberry (Mike); six great-grandchildren, Caleb and Calynn Trent, Mason Hamlett, Brooks and Dalton Mayberry, and Dylan Chernault; one sister, Virginia Ashby; two brothers, Grandville and Earnest Hamlett; a devoted sister-in-law, Annie Mae Crabtree. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at Wickliffe Cemetery by the Rev. Allan Murphy. Memorial contributions may be made to the National D-Day Memorial, P. O.
