On the morning of March 11, 2019, Edith Cabaniss Poindexter, 91, went to be with her husband Jack Robinson Poindexter. Edith was born in Campbell County, January 16, 1928 daughter of the late Jack Beverly Cabaniss and Mary Elizabeth Yates Cabaniss. She graduated from Randolph Henry High School in 1945, attended Madison College, where she served as president of the Madison College All Girl Orchestra from 1948-1949, was a member of the Alpha Sigma Tau sorority, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in education in 1949. She then graduated from Lynchburg College in 1970 with a Master of Education in School Administration. Edith taught school in Campbell and Pittsylvania counties for seventeen years and served as Head Mistress of Staunton River Academy in Brookneal from 1968 thru 1972. She worked at Red Hill, Patrick Henry National Memorial as Administrative Assistant, Curator and Genealogist, was an honorary trustee of the Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation, considered an authority on Patrick Henry genealogy and was made a life-time honorary member of the Patrick Henry Descendants’ Branch by the Descendants. She worked as an interpreter in the Everglades National Park in 1978 and became an avid bird watcher and wild flower enthusiast. She was a Charter member of the Red Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and served one term as regent; one term as District Director, District III, VADAR; a member of State Speaker’s Staff, VADAR; a member of the Kirkwood Otey Chapter UDC; a member of the Suzanne Rochet Chapter of the Founders of Manikin Town; charter member of the Campbell County Historical Society, serving one term as vice-president; a member of Patrick Henry Auxiliary and served one term as president; served as co-chairman of the Campbell County Bi-centennial committee in 1980-81. She and her husband Jack traveled all over the continental U.S. many times, concentrating on traveling “off the beaten path.” She is survived by two sons, Cole R. Poindexter (Judy) of Altavista, Blake C. Poindexter of Long Island; four grandchildren, Aaron Poindexter (Stacy) of Forest, Rachael Rutledge (Jason) of Evington, Lindsey Jackson (Evan) of Lynchburg, Sara Poindexter of Richmond; six great-grandchildren, Payton Poindexter, Ty Poindexter, Loden Cole Rutledge, Abbigail Poe, Summer Mitchell, Kayley Mitchell; one sister, Jackie Beales of Maryland; one brother Michael Cabaniss of Winchester. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Tara Lynn Poindexter. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to her caregivers, Pee Wee Pack and Hazel Hammock and to the Centra Hospice staff, especially Carmen Webb, for the loving care of their mother. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 17, 2019 at Patrick Henry’s Red Hill Plantation.
