Maxine Sowell Elder, 78, of Concord, passed to the other side peacefully at home on Friday, March 15, 2024. She was the widow of the late John F. Elder.
Mrs. Elder was born in Lynchburg, February 13, 1946, a daughter of the late Maxwell B. Sowell and the late Doris Clark Sowell. She was a member of New Chapel Baptist Church in Rustburg. Maxine had a variety of occupations in her life: schoolteacher at William Campbell High School and Brookneal Elementary School, restaurant owner (Jack’s Place), veterinarian worker, and private sitter, from which she retired in July 2021 when her health began to fail.
There were three things that were of utmost importance to her: her family, hard work and love of the Lord.
She leaves behind three sons: Matthew Morris, Chris Morris (Angie Crawley) all of Concord and Mark “Andy” Morris (Melissa Cardoza) of Lynchburg; four dearly loved grandchildren: Lexi Morris (Owen Stone), Conner Morris, Maeve Cardoza-Morris and Maggie Cardoza-Morris; a brother Randall C. Sowell of Madison Heights; and former daughters-in-law, Stephanie Williams of Rustburg, Ashley Gray of Mineral and Emily Morris of Lynchburg; and the special team at Centra Hospice.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 22, 2024, at Henderson Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Tim Dooley.
