I cared for Mr. Pillow for many years at the Salem VAMC. Being the same age we became good friends and I always admired the courage and resilience that he displayed despite his ongoing medical problems. He was a real gentleman and continued to send me greetings and pens at Christmas after I retired. He was the type of person who made practicing medicine a worthwhile experience. I met Walter in the Navy and we drilled together for many years. He was gentle soul. I never heard him say a harsh word about anything. I know he will be missed by every one that knew him. Such a good guy. Fair winds and smooth seas shipmate.
