Edward Carrington “Ned” Lunsford, 67, of Brookneal passed away at Lynchburg General Hospital, surrounded by his family and Pastor Herndon Jeffreys, on Wednesday, May 11, 2022. He was the husband of the late Kathleen “Kathy” Nagy Lunsford. Ned was born in Lynchburg, June 22, 1954, a son of the late Adolphus Lowe Lunsford II and the late Elizabeth Williams Lunsford. He is survived by two brothers, A. Lowe Lunsford III of Charleston, South Carolina, Joseph Scott Lunsford (Cindy) of Brookneal; three nieces Elizabeth Lunsford Fennell (Will), Catherine Lunsford Faulconer (Matt), Allison Lunsford Wade (Shawn); one nephew, Matthew Lunsford (Asia); several great nieces, nephews, and cousins; special friends, Dwight Moon, Chris Anderson, and Bill Stiffler. He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Douglass Lunsford. Ned was a graduate of William Campbell High School and attended CVCC. He was a lifelong member of Brookneal Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder. He was devoted to his church especially the special music played by Pastor Herndon Jeffreys and often accompanied by Dean Jarvis on guitar, and Ava Jane Connelly on piano. Ned also looked forward to the fellowship and interesting discussions generated by the Sunday School class each Sunday. He was the owner and operator of Cedar Forest Grist Mill where he produced flower and corn meal. At an early age, Ned became interested in the workings of grist mills. Mr. Luther Harper operated a grist mill and Ned spent many Saturday afternoons visiting with the Harper family at Hat Creek. Mr. Harper became a mentor to Ned, teaching him to turn wheat and corn into flour and meal. Ned loved the time he spent with the Harper family and decided at an early age that one day he would operate his own grist mill. For Ned, Cedar Forest Mill was a true labor of love. He was proud of the superior quality flour and corn meal he produced. Ned also loved the beauty of the natural world along with a keen interest in the history of Brookneal and the surrounding area. As a child, Ned exhibited a fertile imagination and had a cast of imaginary characters and stories that they told one another. Best of all Ned was a smart, kind, and gentle man with an unexpected sense of humor. A memorial service will be held at Brookneal Presbyterian Church on June 4, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. with interment at Wickliffe Cemetery. A private reception for family and close friends will follow the memorial service at 110 Pick Street, Brookneal. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Brookneal Volunteer Fire Department, Brookneal Historical Society or Patrick Henry Memorial Library.
