Marshall started his 35-year banking career at Fidelity Bank in Brookneal, VA in 1961 shortly before he and Jean (Carole Jean Perkins) were married. He started as an Assistant Cashier and made his way up the ranks to Vice President and Bank Manager. The middle years of his career were spent in Chase City until he returned to manage the Brookneal branch of Central Fidelity where he started his career. This banking career allowed Marshall to do what he did best, which was talk and spend time with people in the community, especially the farm community. He rarely met a person where he couldn’t find a connection. He was either distantly related to them or he found some other connection. He truly never met a stranger and never forgot a name. If you were a stranger when you met him, you were his friend by the end of the conversation. He was a person that people never forgot once they talked to him even for a short time.
During his 10 years in Chase City, he was an active member in the Lions Club, was a deacon at First Baptist Church, and served on the town council.
He served as a Board Member for Halifax Regional Health System from 1999 to 2013.
He was a member of the Staunton River Masonic Lodge, No. 155, starting in 2013.
He always enjoyed being outdoors. He was an avid golfer, hunter, and fisherman sharing all these activities with family and friends. Some of his golf accolades include holes-in-one and shooting his age when he was just 67. Every year in the fall when it became too cold to play golf, he would put on his blaze orange vest and take to the fields hunting for quail with his bird dogs. Not surprisingly, he was an excellent shot. He spent many hours outside with his grandchildren showing them the joys of outdoor activities. He even made work fun for them, especially the blueberry picking. He loved gardening and keeping an immaculate yard. He continued indoor gardening when he no longer had an outdoor space to maintain. He definitely had a green thumb and continued raising beautiful orchids his whole life. From the time he was a young boy, he loved playing baseball whenever he could find time after chores were done, especially with his brothers Phil and Jimmy. He played shortstop through high school and was captain of the team his senior year. He was also a great fan of the sport. He listened to games on the radio and watched any game that was on television, but he always looked forward to games where his beloved St. Louis Cardinals were playing. Stan “The Man” Musial was his baseball idol.
In every sense, Marshall was a true small-town country gentleman.
Marshall had a kind gentle calming way about him and very rarely got upset. He showed compassion, empathy and patience with everyone he encountered. He always looked for someone to help and did so without expecting anything in return. He and Jean raised their children with the same philosophy.
He had a special relationship with his mother who was only 18 years older than him. He was very protective of her and lovingly cared for her the last 18 years of her life after his stepfather passed away.
He was a member of Brookneal Baptist Church, Brookneal, VA.
Marshall was born to the late Stanford DeWitt and Emma Frances Clements Crews as the oldest of 5 children. He is survived by son Mark Edward Crews (Andrea) of Charlottesville, VA; daughter Marsha Jean Crews Owens (Derek) of Raleigh, NC; daughter Catherine Leigh Crews Kirkland (Jeff) of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren John Marshall Crews, Angelina Frances Crews, Emma Haydon Owens, Mary Withers Kirkland, James Marshall Owens, Carole Adickes Kirkland, Sara Marshall Kirkland, and Thomas Jefferson Kirkland, V; brother Jimmy E. Crews (Peggy) of Halifax, VA; sister Mary Frances Crews Gillan (Jim) of Hillsborough, NC; and sister-in-law, Frances Crews, wife of late brother Philip S. Crews. He was preceded in death by his wife Carole Jean Perkins Crews; brothers Philip S. Crews and Gerald L. Crews; and stepfather, Lewis Clinton Crews.
A memorial service will be held at Brookneal Baptist Church, Brookneal, VA on April 18, 2026 at 2:00 pm. Visitation will be held in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service. Private interment will be held at a later date.

Daniel Dwight DeJarnette, Sr., 81, of Gladys passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. He was the husband of Linda Merryman DeJarnette.
Born in Lynchburg on October 2, 1944, Daniel was the son of the late Hunter Archer DeJarnette and the late Hazel Virginia White DeJarnette. Daniel was named after Daniel Richard DeJarnette, who died during D-Day in 1944. He graduated from Virginia Tech with a Master’s Degree and retired from Campbell County School System. He was a member of Rustburg United Methodist Church.
Daniel is survived by a son, Daniel Dwight DeJarnette, Jr. of Rustburg; daughter, Audrey DeJarnette (Michael Ward) of Madison Heights, and from his first marriage to Carol, Leigh DeJarnette Davis, Sarah DeJarnette Hill (Daniel), Haley DeJarnette Jones (Brandon) all of North Carolina; grandchildren Faith Davis, Carly Hill, Rachel Hill, Taylor Jones and Evan Jones; sister Bonnie Wilson (Roger) of Rustburg, a number of nieces and nephews, and his frisky Feline Family who we referred to as our angels with fur.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Hunter Archer “Buddy” DeJarnette and sisters Joyce DeJarnette Shorter and Patricia DeJarnette Massie.
Danny spent the majority of his working days at William Campbell High School as an agriculture teacher, an administrator and as a visiting teacher-social worker where he helped many students and their families when they needed a boost in their educational endeavor. He was always touched when former students would come up to him and let him know how much he helped him. Ever the teacher, he taught hunter safety classes for many years. Danny taught participants to always respect hunting and always put safety first. He enjoyed genealogy, Civil War history and his Hokies (especially football). His Eastern Star and Masonic affiliation meant a great deal to Danny, he served as Worship Master at Mackey Lodge. He was especially proud when his son, Daniel, Jr. became a fellow Mason. Father and son could attend Masonic events together. Danny and Linda enjoyed the Blue Ridge parkway and having picnics while taking in the beauty of the spectacular mountains. Danny loved nature, appreciated every tree, flower and animal creature he would encounter on our travels. One of Danny's favorite sayings was, "People need to take time to stop and smell the roses." Thank you, Danny, for smelling God's lovely roses with me. In spite of difficult health challenges the past years, we are so extremely grateful for our friends, family and health providers who supported us and encouraged us. Thank you especially for the prayers on our behalf. We are so blessed by our Heavenly Father. "Those we love are with the Lord, and the Lord has promised to be with us. If they are with Him and He is with us, they cannot be far away." ~P. Marshall.
A funeral service will be conducted by Rev. Dr. Cecelia Brooks on Sunday, March 8, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at Rustburg United Methodist Church with interment to follow with Masonic rites at Cumbie Memorial Cemetery in Rustburg. A family visitation will be held on Saturday, March 7, from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. at Henderson Funeral Home Chapel.

Iris White Guthrie passed away suddenly on January 19, 2026, at home at the age of 98. Present at her homegoing were her daughter and son-in-law, Debra and David Foster. She was the loving wife of the late Herbert William Guthrie for 63 years.
Mrs. Guthrie was born in Charlotte County on Nov. 3, 1927, a daughter of the late William Thomas White, Jr. and the late Minnie Conner White.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, William Garland White, Hilton Tune White and Wilmer Bennett White; sisters, Lois Connell White and Thelma White Mason; brother-in-law, Bernard M. Mason; sister-in-law, Thelma Stephens White; nephew Steven E. Mason; niece, Bonnie White Brock; and a great nephew, Carter Thomas White.
Surviving Mrs. Guthrie are: her loving and caring daughter and son-in-law, Debra Guthrie Foster and David G. Foster of Gladys; brother, Reginald Earl White and wife Joann of Phenix; and sister-in-law, Rebecca “Beckie” Crump White of Chase City. She is also survived by nieces and nephews: Carole Jane Mason Jones (Carroll) of Weyers Cave, Connie Mason Joyce (Keith) of Hilton Head, S.C., Regina White Thompson (Lee) of Richmond, William Thomas White III (Regina) of Phenix, Michael Scott White of Chase City. In addition, she is survived by a special niece who helped care for her and visited often, Mary Lynn Guthrie Hawkins (Danny), also, Jimmy Adams, Jane Adams Crews, Yvonne Guthrie Hughes, Glenn Guthrie, Bonnie Carey Monroe, Dale Carey Wood and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Iris grew up on the family farm, attended grade school at Aspen, and graduated from Randolph-Henry High School in the class of 1945. After graduation, she had to decide what she would do for the future. She chose farming as her choice of work and remained on the farm so she could help contribute to the livelihood of the family. Four years later, of what she thought was long enough of tobacco, etc., on Dec. 2, 1948, she left the home to marry the “love of her life”, Herbert W. Guthrie of Brookneal.
Mrs. Guthrie, a former member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, moved her membership to Brookneal Baptist Church in 1956 to join her family. She loved her church and soon found herself as WMU president, Sunday school teacher, member of the Bethany Sunday School and a former member of the sanctuary choir. She loved to sing, dance, and was well known for her cooking ability. She especially enjoyed preparing delicious meals for her family and friends. Iris really loved poetry too, and would oftentimes recite her poems at family gatherings, church and civic organizations. One of her special poems was “Somebody’s Mother”. She was a happy and thoughtful person, always spreading fun and joy to those around her.
Iris was always concerned for her town and wanted only the best for Brookneal. She and Herbert were business owners in Brookneal for over sixty years, operating Guthrie’s Corner Grocery and Herbert W. Guthrie Real Estate.
The family would like to express their love and sincere appreciation to her caregivers, Betty Booker, Bridgett Hudson, Cindy Penwell and Sherri Maddox.
Funeral services for Mrs. Guthrie will be conducted on Friday, January 23, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. in the Brookneal Baptist Church with the Rev. Andrew Reisberg officiating. Interment will follow in Wickliffe Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
Memorials may be made to Brookneal Baptist Church, The Brookneal Fire Dept., Campbell County Rescue Squad or a charity of your choice.
Condolences may be sent by visiting www.hendersonfuneral.net.

Nancy Jennings Hendricks, born December 26, 1937, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2025. She spent her life in Brookneal, Virginia, a place she called home and where her love and presence shaped generations of family.

Nancy was a devoted mother to Cynthia Hendricks Rutledge (Dale) and Howard Kyle Hendricks II “Chip” (Christy). She was also a loving sister to Wayne Jennings (Linda), and a cherished aunt to many nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart.

Her greatest pride and joy was her family. She was known best by her favorite title, Nana, a role she embraced fully and lovingly. Nana’s world revolved around her grandchildren: Jillyan Rutledge Pritt (Josh), Dagen Rutledge Weaver, Drew Rutledge Bullock (Travis), Kelci Hendricks (Dan Spangler), and her only grandson, who she joins in heaven, Howard Kyle Hendricks III “Trey.” She was also deeply blessed by her five great-grandchildren, Beckett and Hudson Pritt, Rutledge and Lillian Bullock, Westyn Hendricks, and Kate Weaver, each of whom brought her immeasurable happiness.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Martha Jennings, her husband Howard Kyle Hendricks “Kyle,” her sisters Elizabeth Handy and Barbra Ann Gilbert and brother Bobby Jennings.

Nancy’s love was steady, generous, and deeply felt. She always showed up in quiet ways with unwavering devotion, never missing a game or event that her children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren were involved in. To so many, she was simply Nana, a name spoken with love. Her legacy lives on through the family she loved so fiercely, and she will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know her.

There will be a graveside service Wednesday, December 17, 2025 at 11:00a.m. at Childrey Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Jerry Stanfield officiating. The family will receive friends at her residence.

Christine S. Dunaway, age 95, of Springfield, Virginia, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones and held in the arms of those who cherished her most.

Christine was married to the late Walter J. Dunaway on November 1, 1947, and they shared a devoted marriage until his passing in 1976. Walter was a wonderful husband and father and proudly served his country as a veteran and war hero of World War II. Together, Christine and Walter built what became her lifelong home in Springfield, Virginia and that meant the world to her. It remained her sanctuary until the age of 94. They were blessed with a close-knit neighborhood filled with dear friends and neighbors who became lifelong companions.

Born and raised in Nathalie, Virginia, Christine was the daughter of the late E. White Saunders and Jerdenia Hancock Saunders. She grew up on a farm as one of seven brothers and sisters, an upbringing that shaped her strong work ethic, resilience, and deep Christian faith—values she carried with her throughout her life.

Christine was a devoted mother and was greatly loved by her children, Patricia Dunaway Garcia (Jaime) and the late Michael and Gary Dunaway. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Chris Garcia (Kristin) and Erica Flanigan (Jason), and she adored her role as great-grandmother to Keeli, a student at Liberty University; Olivia, a high school senior; Luke, in the 9th grade; Sara, in the 4th grade; and Zachary, in the 1st grade.

For many years, Christine worked as a preschool teacher at Kiddie Kollege, a private Christian school in Springfield, Virginia. After the school closed, she continued her career working administratively for the President of Rent-A-Crane in Springfield.

Christine found joy in gospel, country, and classic music; tending to beautiful flowers in her yard; enjoying good food; and savoring the special flavors of the country cooking she grew up with. She loved traveling with her dear friend Dottie and cherished lunches and shopping trips with her good friend Betty Jo. She was known for her love of fashion and her timeless sense of style.

Above all, Christine treasured time spent with her family. She was an incredibly strong woman who faced significant adversity and profound loss throughout her life, including the heartbreaking loss of her husband and her two sons at far too young an age. Despite these tragedies, she met every challenge with grace, resilience, and unwavering faith, continuing to build a full and meaningful life marked by love, laughter, friendship, and devotion to her family. Beautiful, smart, and funny, Christine will be remembered for her warmth, strength, and the deep love she gave to all who knew her.

Christine’s faith was the foundation of her life. She trusted in the Lord through every season, and her quiet strength and gentle spirit reflected that faith daily. She now rests in the eternal peace of God’s promise, reunited with those who went before her. Her legacy lives on in the generations she nurtured and the many lives she touched.

There will be a funeral service Thursday, December 18, 2025 at 1:00p.m. at Falling River Baptist Church with the Rev. Nathan Fair officiating. Interment to follow at the church cemetery. The family will have a visitation one hour prior to the service (12:00 p.m.) at the church.
